Dark galaxies or tidal debris? Kinematical clues to the origin of massive isolated HI clouds

چکیده
An extended HI cloud (VIRGOHI 21) with an HI mass of ∼ 10 M⊙ and no apparent optical counterpart was recently discovered in the Virgo cluster. In order to understand the origin of physical properties of apparently isolated HI clouds like the VIRGOHI21, we numerically investigate physical properties of tidal HI debris that were formed by galaxy-galaxy interaction in clusters of galaxies. Our hydrodynamical simulations demonstrate that tidal debris with total HI masses of 10 − 10 M⊙ can have (1) wide HI velocity widths (> 200 kms), (2) a small mass fraction of stars (∼10%), and (3) a mean B-band surface brightness of the stellar components fainter than 30 mag arcsec. These results suggest that the VIRGOHI21, which lies at a projected distance of ∼ 150 kpc from the one-armed, HI-rich spiral galaxy M99 (NGC 4254), is tidal debris. We propose that the comparison between the simulated and the observed velocity fields of HI clouds allows us to better understand their nature and origin (e.g., whether they are just tidal debris or “dark galaxies” that have HI gas only and are embedded by dark matter halos). We also discuss the timescales for isolated HI gas to be evaporated by thermal conduction of the hot intracluster gas.

Tidal Debris posing as Dark Galaxies
Debris sent into the intergalactic medium during tidal collisions has received much attention as it can tell us about several fundamental properties of galaxies, in particular their missing mass, both in the form of cosmological Dark Matter and so-called Lost Baryons. High velocity encounters, which are common in clusters of galaxies, are able to produce faint tidal debris that may appear as st...
متن کاملTidal Debris from High-velocity Collisions as Fake Dark Galaxies: a Numerical Model of Virgohi21
High speed collisions, although current in clusters of galaxies, have long been neglected, as they are believed to cause little damages to galaxies, except when they are repeated, a process called “harassment”. In fact, they are able to produce faint but extended gaseous tails. Such low-mass, starless, tidal debris may become detached and appear as free floating clouds in the very deep HI surve...
متن کاملThe large extent of dark matter haloes probed by the formation of tidal dwarf galaxies
In several interacting systems, gas accumulations as massive as 10 M are observed near the tip of tidal tails, and are thought to be possible progenitors of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies. Using N-body simulations of galaxy interactions, we show that the existence of such features requires that dark matter haloes around spiral galaxies extend at least ten times further than the stellar disks. The massive...
متن کاملTidal Dwarf
We review the observational evidences for tidal dwarf galaxies, a class of small galaxies formed out of the tidal debris of collisions between massive galaxies. Tidal dwarfs are found far from the interacting parent galaxies, associated to massive clouds of atomic hydrogen located at the tip of long tidal tails. These newly formed galaxies are among the best cases for the study of galaxy format...
متن کاملA top-down scenario for the formation of massive Tidal Dwarf Galaxies
Among those objects formed out of collisional debris during galaxy mergers, the prominent gaseous accumulations observed near the tip of some long tidal tails are the most likely to survive long enough to form genuine recycled galaxies. Using simple numerical models, Bournaud, Duc & Masset (2003) claimed that tidal objects as massive as 10 M⊙ could only form, in these simulations, within extend...
